Student Research

Students can engage is a wide variety of research and scholarly projects throughout their medical education and training. There are numerous opportunities to participate through the FLEX (Flexible and Enhance Learning) course as well as research experiences outside of the medical curriculum.

Each year, the Southern Medical Program hosts the UBC Okanagan Interdisciplinary Student Health Conference. Students from UBC Okanagan, Southern Medical Program, and BC Cancer are invited to showcase their health science research and public health experiences at an adjudicated poster presentation event.

The FLEX (Flexible and Enhanced Learning) course is designed to foster innovation, creativity, critical thought, and community engagement to help prepare students for their future medical careers. Students typically have a half-day per week in addition to other dedicated block time to participate in a wide range of projects.

FAculty of Medicine Summer Student Research Projects (SSRP)

SMP students (Year 1 and 3) are eligible to apply for research funding to support their participation in four to eight weeks of supervised research during their extracurricular period. This program is funded by a number of different sources. Interior Health supports research projects taking place within the BC Interior. Visit the SSRP website to learn more.

BC Cancer research studentships

SMP students (Years 1 and 2) are eligible to apply for studentship awards to support their involvement in cancer research at BC Cancer. Check the BC Cancer website for funding opportunities.

The Colin & Lois Pritchard Foundation Award

Awards have been made available annually through a gift from The Colin & Lois Pritchard Foundation for M.D. students in the Southern Medical Program undertaking research projects affiliated with BC Cancer-Kelowna. Students must be in good academic standing to be eligible. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Southern Medical Program.

Southern Medical Program Research Award

Awards have been made available annually by the Southern Medical Program for M.D. students in the Southern Medical Program undertaking summer research projects. Students must be in good academic standing to be eligible. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Southern Medical Program.

CCDPM Clinical Research & QI Incubator Award

Awards have been made available annually by the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CCDPM) for M.D. students in the Southern Medical Program and students in direct-entry undergraduate programs at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan undertaking research projects affiliated with the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management Clinical Research & QI Incubator program. M.D. students must be in good academic standing to be eligible, while direct-entry undergraduate students must have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Southern Medical Program.
