SMP Distributed Sites
The Southern Medical Program (SMP) is a distributed program within a distributed program. As part of UBC's MD Undergraduate Program, the SMP provides medical professional training in communities throughout the BC Interior.
Years 1 and 2 are delivered primarily in Kelowna at the Reichwald Health Sciences Centre at UBC's Okanagan Campus, Clinical Academic Campus at Kelowna General Hospital, and local family physicians offices.
For Year 3, the SMP provides clinical training at numerous hospitals and health centres including Kelowna General Hospital, Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, Penticton Regional Hospital, Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, and East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook. In total, the SMP presently offers Year 4 Electives in 15 different communities.
Videoconferencing technology is a vital component to the delivery of the SMP. From participating in lectures to clinical skills training, the technology allows for faculty, staff, and students to connect with their peers throughout the MD Undergraduate Program. Most importantly, it ensures students receive the same curriculum and depth of learning experiences regardless of their geographic location.
