Inspiring future rural healthcare professionals in the BC Interior

The Healthcare Travelling Roadshow hit the road in early May to present to high school students in Salmo, Creston, and Lumby.

As part of the annual initiative, a group of nine healthcare students delivered hands-on, interactive experiences to rural high schools. The ultimate goals of the project are to raise awareness about the diverse range of careers available and help inspire future healthcare professionals.

Four SMP students Ariel Stuart, Ayra McCarthy, Jayda Third, and Omar Yossofzai helped lead the Roadshow as part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Flexible and Enhance Learning Course.

Over 450 students from Salmo Secondary School, Kootenay River Secondary School in Creston, and Charles Bloom Secondary School in Lumby participated in the school visits. This year’s presenters included students from medicine, nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, cardiology technology, and respiratory therapy.

“Our students were extremely impressed by the hands-on nature of the experiences and felt as though they were given a great deal of information about careers in British Columbia’s health care industry,” says Tyler Hanson, Acting Vice Principal, Charles Bloom Secondary School. “I would highly recommend this experience for any schools whose students are needing information about careers in B.C.’s health care industry delivered by working professionals who are genuinely interested in building engagement in students through hands-on work.”

The Healthcare Travelling Roadshow is delivered in partnership with the UBC Southern Medical Program, Rural Education Action Plan, and Interior Health.
