Volunteer & Standardized Patients

Volunteer Patients (VP) and Standardized Patients (SP) are an integral part of the education and training of medical students in the Southern Medical Program.

Volunteer Patients

Clinical Skills education with VPs allows the students to gain confidence and competence with communication and clinical skills in a realistic setting. VPs participate “as themselves” offering their authentic medical history, whether they are healthy or living with an illness or chronic condition.

Standardized Patients

Unlike VPs who come in as themselves and present their own authentic medical information, SPs are healthy individuals trained to portray the personal history, physical symptoms, emotional characteristics and everyday concerns of a case patient. SPs are used in learning sessions as well as highly structured examination sessions.
