Flexible and Enhanced Learning

The Southern Medical Program is training the next generation of doctors, making new discoveries, and creating pathways to better health for communities across the Interior Health region. We invite all clinicians and researchers in various health sciences disciplines to participate in the FLEX (Flexible and Enhanced Learning) course as FLEX Activity Supervisor.

What is FLEX?

FLEX is a series of courses that offer medical students unique opportunities to pursue a variety of scholarly activities in Year 1, 2 and 4 of the renewed curriculum. In FLEX, students develop and pursue activities that allow them to explore individual learning interests in greater depth. FLEX activities can take place in academic settings or communities anywhere in British Columbia, Canada or the world.

When medical students work on their FLEX activity?

After completing a series of Foundation of Scholarship modules in their first year of undergraduate medical training, medical students are required to complete 3 FLEX activities in Years 1, 2 and 4 of the renewed UBC medical undergraduate program.

FLEX curriculum timelines in 2024-25 academic year:

  • First year medical students: MEDD 419 FLEX Block (6 weeks): Apr 28 – Jun 6, 2025
  • Second year medical students: MEDD 429 FLEX Block (3 weeks): Apr 22 – May 9, 2025
  • Fourth year medical students: MEDD 449 FLEX Block (4 weeks): Nov 6 – Dec 20, 2024

What is the role of a FLEX activity supervisor?

A FLEX activity supervisor works with a student to develop an activity, provides direction and mentorship during the student’s engagement with the activity, and provides assessment of the student’s performance during the activity. Learn more about supervisor role.

How to become a FLEX activity supervisor?

If you have an activity, research project or other learning opportunity that you think will be of interest to medical students, we encourage you to post your area of interest, or a specific activity or project by completing an online FLEX Activity Proposal form. This form will provide information such as a description of the activity, time required to complete the project, and your contact information for medical students to connect with you. Submit a FLEX Activity Proposal form.

If you have any questions about supervising FLEX students, please contact Dr. Kamran Golmohammadi, SMP FLEX course director at Kamran.Golmohammadi@ubc.ca.
